New Cat on the Block
One of the best feelings in the world is having a furry monster on your lap and hearing him purr. As you may already know, I am a huge animal fan and have had my share of cats. So the feeling of warm cuddles and purrs is all too familiar to me. However, my husband and I decided that we wanted a pet of our own so we got a kitten.
A few months ago my husband and I were out for a weekend in the south of England with his family. Since it was a bit of a drive to our destination, I spent my time browsing the web on my phone and stumbled upon cats up for adoption. Once I showed my husband a picture of a ginger cat that was only about a 30-minute drive from where we were, we knew we had to get him.
We instantly fell in love with our ginger boy, which my husband said we have to call Decimus or Deci for short. He is very playful and affectionate all at the same time.
Decimus is a mix of Bengal and British short hair. His mom is a Bengal and his dad is a BSH, and both of those combined make for a gorgeous ginger boy.
Decimus is very playful. It’s been very fun having our little boy around, as he always keeps us entertained whether it’s by trying to fit into boxes or playing with receipts. I have never met a cat who is so low maintenance when it comes to toys. All Decimus needs are a few receipts and he is good to play on his own for hours.
Sometimes he goes a bit crazy and runs around the house like a chicken without its head, taking out everything in his path. Other times, he likes to pretend that the ground is lava and jumps on chairs and countertops.
Decimus is very affectionate. He loves to cuddle up in bed with my husband and me and purr himself to sleep. There’s nothing sweeter than waking up in the middle of the night to find your kitten cuddled up right next to you.
He also likes to knead before he cuddles up to you so you get a nice little massage while he gets comfortable.
Decimus became a part of our family and it broke our heart just a few weeks ago when we had to leave him in the hospital for a few days. You see, being a kitten, he is naturally curious, getting into anything and everything. One morning we found an empty pill capsule on the floor and since we didn’t know if he had any or if it just fell out of one of our bags, I had to take him to the vet just to be safe.
We knew it was a paracetamol capsule and paracetamol can be fatal to pets. Unfortunately, it attacks the organs and most of the time there are no visual signs. Therefore, I had to move quickly and get him to the vet right away. Decimus was given an antidote to bind the (potential) paracetamol so it doesn’t spread through his body and cause any harm.
Since this was a potential poisoning situation, our boy had to stay at the hospital for monitoring and blood tests for a few days.
I was so heartbroken when I had to leave the hospital all by myself. Our house felt empty and I couldn’t think of anything but our little boy.
This was such a scary situation for me mostly because I felt so helpless and because I saw how much my cat wasn’t enjoying it. Surprisingly, he was very good with the vets and tolerant of what was done to him. By the end of our hospital stay, some nurses were sad to see him go as he became one of their favourites.
Thankfully, he made a full recovery and all the tests came out just fine. It’s amazing to have Decimus back and our house finally feels full again, especially since it’s filled with little purrs and meows.
I love having a little, playful kitten around, it just fills the house with love and energy. Decimus is also very cute, especially when he sleeps in the strangest positions imaginable.
We also have a bonsai tree, which we call Zanthys, and it seems that Decimus took a liking to it. I always find Deci cuddled up next to the tree, and he looks so peaceful.
Decimus is a part of our family and I can’t imagine our lives without him. It’s amazing seeing this little bundle of fur grow up and change into his adult cat face, and learn a few lessons along the way – hopefully, not eating more paracetamol is one of them.
Do you have any pets that are a part of your family, if so, what are they and what are their names?
