Matryoshka Russian Nesting Dolls – Behind the Scenes

Coffee Talks

In a small town, 124 km outside of Moscow, stands a 2 story building, just like many others in the city.  But once you step inside, you’re transported into a magical world, a world where your creative fantasies come alive.  This is the matryoshka (matreshka) factory, or the birth house of the Russian nesting dolls.

The art of painting matryoshkas started off in this small town family more than 15 years ago.  Yet each year they  gained more clients and expanded the company.  The family branded their company in 2006 as “Shatura Art Group” and now sell their products in over 55 countries with worldwide shipping.
What I love about this company is that they still have that small business mentality, and they will welcome you in with open arms when you place an order.  They take their time and strive to understand what the customer wants.

I have placed numerous orders for them and our house is slowly getting taken over by these Russian nesting dolls.
The most recent order that we’ve placed with this company was for my wedding.  My husband and I knew that we wanted to have our wedding souvenir to represent something Russian and English, so we ended up getting little Matryoshkas’s and putting bon-bon sweets inside.  Both of those were definitely a hit and I love seeing them at my relative’s houses.

Just last week, my husband and I visited Russia and I’ve decided to take him on a mini tour to the factory.  We actually got to meet the woman who painted the matryoshka’s for our wedding!

Here are a few, behind the scenes photos.  It’s amazing to see that each and every one of the matryoshka dolls are hand painted.

We have about 3 different types of these Matryoshka dolls around the house, here is another one with Moscow outline on the front of it.
